Pooled results from three RCTs (1,3,6)
showed a borderline increase in the risk of stopping breastfeeding by 6 months of age in
the group of mothers and newborns discharged within 48 hours of birth (RR=1.06, 95%
CI 0.95 to 1.18). There was significant heterogeneity between the studies (I2=81.1%). The
overall quality of evidence was graded as very low.
