Dear F,
Happy New Year! I pray you had a meaningful Christmas celebration and the new year has started well for you.
I was excited to read your most recent letter and learn about your involvement in the children’s camps. It sounds like you had good experiences and learned about yourself and your relationship with God through the experiences. The trip to Chiang Mai to fellowship and worship with another church also sounds like a good experience. It is exciting to see how God is teaching you and using you to teach others about Him!
I also got to go to Chiang Mai in November to study. It was a group of international workers from around Asia learning how to be better leaders in our ministries. We had intense times of study and made many new friends. On Monday, January 11, I am going to our denomination’s youth winter gatherings. I am part of the leadership team for the youth gatherings. It is exciting to me to see how God is working in these young people’s lives as they learn about Jesus and how to live for Him.
Here in Japan there are very few Christians and it is quite difficult for young people to talk about their faith or tell others they are Christians. There isn’t violent persecution, but it definitely isn’t acceptable to talk about faith or God with their friends. What is it like in Thailand? I recently heard from a friend who works there that it is very difficult there, too. Maybe, like Japan, many of the cultural traditions are based on Buddhist traditions, and so not participating in them seems like a person is rejecting their own culture.
In December we had many exciting activities at our church to help people learn about the true meaning of Christmas. I especially enjoyed how our church members worked together to plan and prepare for the events. Many more church members participated this year than in the past. And, at each event, at least one new person attended. We are praying that these people will come back again someday.
I am so proud of the way you are studying hard and seeking God. I know it is difficult to study and go to classes six days a week. I hope you also have time to rest! I will continue to pray for you, as you asked, to have a healthy relationship with God. You can pray this for me, too! I think this is something we all need to keep praying about, all of our lives.
May God bless you, keep you healthy, and give you strength for each day.
Much love from Japan,
Shan
