GM1 is present in every cell type of the immune system
that has been analyzed so far, with a variety of functional assignments not yet fully elucidated. From what has been
learned, it is clear there are interesting parallels in the
GM1 activities in neurons and certain immune cells, a
prime example being activation of TRPC5 channels with
resultant Ca2+ influx. For details on this and other aspects
of GM1 function in the immune system, see the supplementary
material online.
