By 1947-1948 I had reached the age of thirteen and started working as a conductor, on my brother Cassim's bus. In 1948 I took out a bus conductor's license. When I started to work I was paid one kyat and fifty pyas a day and meals. Our bus was the "Khin San yin" and had the Rangoon-Insein run. Within a year I was earning three kyats a day. Sometime after that the bus-owner increased my daily wages to five kyats, since I had become quite proficient in getting passengers and had also picked up some knowledge of car engine repair and maintenance. I worked as a conductor for three years, after which I look out a driver's license and was engaged by a rich Chinese who lived next door to us, to drive his jeep-taxi. Besides being provided with meals, l was given a monthly salary of ninety kyats. I worked for him for one year and eight months, after which I left the job.
