A rigid Thainess is heavily promoted both by the state and in civil society, partly in reaction to perceived threats from the West in the form of globalization and the reckless practice of capitalism which hurt the country in, for instance, the 1997 economic crisis. Politics has become increasingly conservative and hyper-royalism has also grown since the mid-1980s.6
