My boyfriend and I initially booked this homestay for two weeks to volunteer with the Education Project. We had little to no responses from the company and when we showed up we were taken for free from the river house to the hill house. After the 45 min journey with beautiful views we were asked by the driver if we had a reservation. They said they had no record of us coming but put us in their cheapest room for free as we were volunteering. The room was extremely basic and was essentially a shed but it's what we had expected. We were sharing a toilet and shower room with the locals. The place is absolutely stunning and very peaceful however it is quite unorganised. The owner told us at 6.30am on the day we were supposed to begin teaching in the education project that the school was closed for three days. Quite annoyed, we decided to stick it out and see the local sites such as the waterfall and hot springs. After a week and a lot of insect bites, we decided to move on. It is a gorgeous place to visit but I understand why people often leave earlier than they had intended. It is very basic with little to do on the evening. The longer you stay the more friendly and talkative the staff and locals are. We had the best Thai food we've ever had at Akha Hill House (potato soup and chicken curry) and it was a really authentic insight to the Akha hill tribe life. To sum up, beautiful place, lovely people, great food but not for the faint-hearted as there is a lot of insects (you are in the jungle!
