Methane produced by landfill waste can be recovered and utilize as an energy source using
highly engineered gas capturing systems, like vertical wells or horizontal collector systems .
CH4 recovery can substantially reduce the methane emissions from landfills. After several
years, however the output of methane is no longer high enough for an efficient gas extraction,
because most of the degradable organic matter is depleted. Although methane emissions continue
for some years. Due to improvements in waste management practices and establishment
of gas capturing systems and cover soils over the last 30 years, methane emissions from landfills
in developed countries decreased, but there is still a high potential of mitigation through
better management practise.
