Semarang is the capital city of the Central Java Province, Indonesia, with a population of 1.7 million in 2009. In the same year, the total waste generated from all sources was approximately 4934 cubic meters per day. In this city, the Jatibarang landfill has been in operation since March 1992. It covers 45 ha with a storage capacity of 4.15 million cubic meters of waste, however, the amount of waste in this landfill reached 5.75 million cubic meters in 2009, therefore 1.6 million cubic meters of waste is beyond its capacity. Therefore, reducing the volume of waste transported to landfills is an important task for this city.
