The included angles for V-groove welds were flame-cut to 35 and 25 on each plate to obtain groove angles of 70 and 50, respectively. All welds were made using a welding current of 650A (corresponding to wire feed speed of 42.33 mm/s), an arc voltage of 32 V, an electrode extension of 25.4 mm and an electrode wire 3.00 mm in diameter. These welding parameter were optimized during another, but related, work, and the heat input was varied by varying the welding speed. Some welds were made in the conventional way, i.e., without powder addition, Using Chandel’s model, the wire-melting rate for these welding parameters was found to be approximately 8 kg/hr, and to achieve a wire-to-powder ratio of unity, the powder feed rate was fixed at 8 kg/hr.
