The next category of the asphalt pavement damage appeared to be related to the intrusion of water below the pavement through the cement treated base. It is well understood by the pavement engineers that water intrusion can have adverse effect on the asphalt concrete by a phenomenon known as “asphalt stripping”. The integrity of asphalt would deteriorate with separation of aggregate from the binder under repeated traffic load. Once the base course is softened by this process, a depression will be formed on the surface along the wheel-path area.
