Umbria is a wine region tucked in central Italy, surrounded by Tuscany, Latium and the Marche. It’s a hilly area, with many of its 11 DOC’s beginning with ‘Colli,” Italian for slope or hill. The region is landlocked, and the first civilizations, the ancient Umbri and then the Etruscans, established their villages along the Tiber river as a hydration source. If you follow the legends of saints, one of the big ones, Francis of Assisi, for which the iconic town is named, was based here.

The “abbocato” style, once the most popular, fell out of favor for its sweetness, but has reinvented itself of late as a sought after dessert wine.
