The HPM
proposes that health-promoting behavior (using
contraception) is based on interactions of cognitiveperceptual
factors (perceived control, perceived benefits,
and perceived barriers) and modifying factors
(influential others) (Pender, 1987). Perceived barriers
are likely to reduce contraceptive use.
This study is considered of importance because
sexuality education needs to be developed further
and sexual and reproductive health services geared
toward teenagers are in their early developmental
stages in Iceland as in many other countries (Bender,
1999). Also, only a few studies have been conducted
in Iceland on contraceptive behavior (Jonsdottir &
Haraldsdottir, 1998; Oskarsson & Geirsson, 1987),
and no previous study has focused entirely on the
teenage population.
