Rudimentary Movement Phase
The first forms of voluntary movement are rudimentary. Rudimentary movements are maturationally determined behaviors seen in the normally developing infant from birth to about age 2. They are heavily influenced by heredity and characterized by a highly predictable sequence that is resistant to change under normal conditions. The rate at which these abilities appear will, however, vary from child to child and relies on biological, environmental, and task-specific factors. The rudimentary movement abilities of the infant represent the basic forms of voluntary movement required for survival. See Table 16.4 for a descriptive profile of selected rudimentary stability, locomotor, and manipulative abilities.
The rudimentary movement phase may be subdivided into two stages that represent progressively higher orders of motor control and movement com petence.
