The effectofthermo-mechanicaltreatmentonthemechanicalpropertiesofanovel β-type Ti–36Nb–5Zr (wt%)alloyhasbeeninvestigated.
The solutiontreatedalloyconsistsof β and α″ phases andexhibitsatwo-stageyieldingwithalowyieldstress(around100MPa).Aftercold
rolling atareductionof87.5%andsubsequentannealingtreatmentat698Kfor25min,a fine microstructurewithnanosized α precipitates
distributed insmall β grains aswellashighdensityofdislocationswasobtainedtoachieveayieldstrengthof720MPaandaultimatetensile
strength of860MPa.Inspiteoftheformationof α precipitates, the β-stabilizers arenotenrichedintheparent β matrix duetotheshortduration
and lowtemperatureofthethermaltreatment,resultinginalowchemicalstabilityof β phase. Thelowstabilityof β phase andthesmallvolume
fraction of α precipitates producealowYoung'smodulusof48GPa.Suchanexcellentcombinationoflowelasticmodulusandhighstrengthin
mechanical propertiesindicatesgreatpotentialforbiomedicalapplications.
