A BETTER LIFE FOR MONKS
The Central Monastic Body (Dratshang Lhentshog) has greatly benefited from the various projects
implemented to improve the living standards of the monks and nuns in all the monastic institutions
throughout the country. The major achievements were seen in the following areas:
1. Health, hygiene, and sanitation - through the establishment of common dining and mess system
in all monastic institutions and sensitization on the importance of cleanliness. Today, with support
from UNICEF, all monastic institutions have access to clean drinking water, toilets, and proper
washing facilities.
2. The introduction of English Language Curriculum has had a huge impact on them. Many monks
and nuns today understand basic English. At the moment, MoE and UNICEF are collaborating
toward providing basic English program to all monastic institutions.
3. The use of fuel wood has drastically gone down with the introduction of electric bulk cookers and
LPG-fed cooking. The program reduced the risk of fire accidents in Dzongs and other monastic
institutions. It also contributed to better health of the monk body through the reduction of smoke
in the kitchen.
