When Ateles marginatus is excluded altogether from the align- ment, the same topology of species-level relationships within the genus Ateles is reconstructed in both our maximum likelihood and Bayesian analysis: A. paniscus is inferred to be the first species to diverge from the spider monkey common ancestor, followed by a split between a clade of A. hybridus + (A. belzebuth + A. chamek) and a clade of A. fusciceps + A. geoffroyi (Fig. 3E and F). This is the same typology reconstructed in our initial Bayesian analysis among the non-marginatus spider monkeys (Fig. 3B).
