The Grameen Bank is an institution created for the purposes of extending credit and the advantages of a banking system to those who had little or no credit, financial history or collateral. Created in 1983 by Dr. Muhammad Yunas to extend banking to rural Bangladesh, the program has lifted many people, including a large and increasing number of women out poverty. The Grameen Bank is sustainable and 98% of its loans are repaid, which is higher than average for the banking industry. [1]
