PURPOSE AND MISSION The purpose and mission may be assigned to a group (as in the previous example of the Goals by Leadership Acadmy task force of UTA) or emerge from wiyhin the group (as in the case of the AT&T National Running Team). Even in the case of an assignedmission, the group may reexamine, modify,revise, or question the mission. It may also embrace the mission as stated. The impoetance of mission is exemplified in IBM's Process Quality Mannagemant, which requires thatba process team of not more than twelve people develop a clear understanding of mission as the first step in the process. The IBM approach demands that all members agree to go in the same direction. The mission statement is converted into a specific agenda, clear goals, and a set of critical success factors.Stating the purpose and mission in the form of specific goals enhances productivity over and above any performance benefits achieved through individual goal setting.
