1. Introduction
Pig (Sus scrofa) is one of the most important domesticated species and can often be in close contact with man. Recently a number of important cases where pig-related material was essential to an investigation have occurred in Taiwan; these include a homicide case as well as an alleged case of theft. Related incidents include issues of food provenance and safety. To address these issues, a reliable, robust DNA test was developed.
Recent genetic data using both mitochondrial and STR markers indicate that the modern pig is the result of multiple independent domestication events from the subspecies of European or Asian wild boar populations [1–4].
