Endophthalmitis is a term used to describe
intraocular inflammation that involves the vitreous
cavity and the anterior chamber of the eye,
but other adjacent ocular tissues such as the
choroid or retina are often affected as well. Although
endophthalmitis can occur as an immune
response to endogenous or foreign antigens
(sterile endophthalmitis), most cases of endophthalmitis
are caused by infectious agents such
as bacteria or fungal organisms
