“Being the wife of Phelps Booth.”
Adam laughed at this, and Lee managed a smile.
Then she grew serious and leaned forward. “Adam, there’s
something I need to tell you. I’m an alcoholic.”
He was shocked. They’d had drinks together the last two nights.
“It’s been about ten years now,” she explained in a low voice.
“There were lots of reasons, OK, some of which you can
probably guess. I’ve been through treatment three times. It’s not
easy.”
“How did it happen to you?”
“Gradually. I met Phelps, and he comes from a family of social
drinkers. Then, when we started to have problems with our
marriage, it was an escape.”
“I hope I’m not the reason you started drinking again.”
“No, but I need your help. You’ll be living with me, and we’ll
