Obesity in a young adult
A 24- year-old graduate student, 188 cm. tall and weighing 132 kg., damaged his knee while playing volleyball. Toward the end of his recovery, he was convinced that he needed to make an effort to correct his obesity. He was referred to a dietician by the student health service, and a diet history revealed that his typical daily intake was 140 g protein, 120 g fat, and 590 g carbohydrate. He expressed the desire to reduce to 86kg, a level close to his ideal weight, without significantly changing his sedentary level of activity. He wishes to accomplish this in 8 months at which time he plans to begin his job search.
