The Kunstmuseum Basel houses among other things, the largest group of works by Holbein and a world-famous collection of leading works from the Classical Modern period, such as American art since 1950.
The highlights of the collection are the works from 1400 to 1600 and art of the 19th to 21st centuries. The main focus of the Classical Modern collection is on cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism, and American art since 1950 (Newman, Warhol, Nauman).
The building at St. Alban-Graben, which is now known as the Kunstmuseum Basel, was designed by architects Rudolf Christ and Paul Bonatz and erected in 1936 specifically to house the Public Art Collection. Extensive renovations have been carried out in recent years.
