Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has in a letter to the interior ministry requested the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally bestowed name, days after seven of her close relatives were arrested in a purge of officials allegedly involved in corruption, writes the BBC and the Singapore-based daily The Straits Times.
The Crown Prince asked for the removal in light of charges including extortion and smuggling.
Princess Srirasmi Akharapongpreecha, 42, the third wife of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, entered at the age of 22 the service of the Crown Prince as a lady-in-waiting, and in 2001 the pair married. In 2005 the couple had a son, who is now nine years old.
Princess Srirasmi and Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn were already known to be estranged, although they continued to attend official events together. The removal of his wife’s royal name is believed to constitute a move toward divorce.
“In a letter issued on Saturday, Air Chief Marshal Sathitpong Sukwimol, the Crown Prince’s secretary, terminated the royally bestowed surname of Akharapongpreecha, ordering those using it to revert to their original surname,” reports The Straits Times.
Surnames to elites and individuals are granted by the royal family, if the individuals are believed to have made great contributions to the crown and country.
