Second, the group interviews did not allow for conclusions
based on consensus among the nurses. Sometimes,
it was clear that the majority of the nurses
agreed with a particular statement, but other issues
clearly applied to the specific situation of an individual
nurse. Another aspect of the group interviews that may
have affected the results is that one group consisted
almost entirely of a single team of nurses working at
the same unit. Their team culture may have had a disproportionately
large effect on the data, masking the
opinion of individual nurses.
We conclude that the pilot study shows the potential
of the guideline to support nurses in discussing suicidality
with patients and in assessing suicide risk. Nurses
who participated in the pilot study were positive in
their advice to implement this guideline in mental
health care.
