Polygon city and town boundaries (also called community boundaries), while not a common map feature, are perhaps harder to show in a meaningful manner on a map than are points. With city polygons, you can easily obscure the other data you are trying to display by actually covering it up or by creating to much visual clutter. To fix this issue, you’ll need to use a simple translucent fill or only show the boundaries. The caveat for maps showing just the city and town boundaries without a fill is that then the particular feature becomes less important to the overall map and, indeed, could simply be too hard to distinguish from roads, county boundaries, and other linear features. So your presentation of this feature will depend on how important the boundary is to the map’s purpose, while being mindful to avoid too much clutter or the opposite, too little emphasis on the feature.
