As a consequence of the series connection, the excitation
frequency requirement is reduced to half for a particular speed
(i.e., the motor rotates at twice the synchronous speed). This
system will therefore be quite attractive with cycloconverterfed
drives where speed range can be enhanced. The wound
rotor induction machine, however, is more expensive than the
squirrel cage induction machine, and the aforementioned advantages
may make the SCWRIM drive discussed here a competing
candidate in the high-performance domain, particularly
with a cycloconverter-fed system.
