As the ASEAN Community will emerge at the end of 2015, the Ministry of Education is working out strategies to be implemented after the ASEAN Community is in place.
Deputy Education Minister General Surachet Chaiwong said that Thailand needs to work out a new work plan on education following ASEAN integration. In this regard, two committees had been formed, one to work out new education strategies and action plans and the other to follow up on and assess the implementation in accordance with the strategies.
He said that the draft strategies must be in line with key elements of education, which were endorsed by the Eighth ASEAN Education Ministers Meeting, held in September 2014 in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The key elements seek to promote ASEAN awareness through the learning of history and other subjects, upgrade the quality of education and provide opportunities for everyone to have access to basic education, develop the use of ICT, support vocational education and life-long learning, and strengthen and promote the role of university education.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Education Suthasri Wongsamarn said that, in early 2015, the Ministry of Education will launch an ASEAN mobile learning program in all regions of the country to provide knowledge about ASEAN, so that local people will be ready to become ASEAN citizens.
The program will begin in Bangkok on 26-27 January, followed by Chiang Mai in the North on 5-6 February, Nakhon Si Thammarat in the South on 9-10 February, and Khon Kaen in the Northeast on 16-17 February. It will focus on discussions regarding ASEAN citizens and world citizens for sustainable development. Other activities include a workshop, an English speech contest on “Reaching ASEAN Citizenship through National Core Values,” and an ASEAN exhibition.
The Permanent Secretary said that all these activities would be in line with the Government’s policy on human resources development and prepare Thai people for the soon-to-be ASEAN Community.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, in his national address, stressed the importance of Thailand’s readiness for ASEAN integration and rapid changes in the world. In preparation for the ASEAN Community, he said, Thailand must strengthen its capacity on a sustainable basis and develop human resources in terms of education, employment, and language skills. This will help cope with growing trade and investment and greater competition. It will also enable the country to keep pace with development in neighboring countries, the ASEAN region, and the world at large.
He urged Thai people to adjust themselves in the move toward the full implementation of the ASEAN Community in late 2015.
