Amorphous boron (B) powder (H.C. Starck, purity 95e97%,
average particle size 0.8 mm), carbon black (C) powder (Mitsubishi
Chemical, 99.9% purity; mean particle size 16 nm), and sodium
metal (Nippon Soda, 99.95%) were used as starting materials. Two
types of compact bodies were prepared: compacts of B and C
powder mixtures ([B þ C] compacts), and compacts of mixtures of
Na metal, B, and C powders ([Na þ B þ C] compacts)
