Karen was an 11-year-old girl with a diagnosis of infantile autism. At a
chronological age of 8 years 5 months, Karen attained a Stanford Binet mental
age of 4 years 7 months, and a mental processing composite score of 55 on
the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. At the time of the study she
was able to read and write simple word combinations, perform basic arithmetic,
and verbally communicate temporally or spatially remote concepts. She had
no physical or sensory limitations, and was able to perform most activities
of daily living with verbal instruction. Karen was not prescribed any psychoactive
medications.
