Despite the success of PCVs, PD is still an ongoing challenge. Since the advent of PCVs, the most common PDcausing pneumococcal strains change as vaccine strains becomeless prominent and non-vaccine strains increase [11]. As a result,only a modest decrease in all-cause IPD has been observed since2010 [12]. Continual pneumococcal surveillance and subsequentdevelopment of new PCVs with broader coverage are needed tonot only maintain vaccine-mediated control of historically prominent serotypes, but additionally meet the challenge of new, emerging serotypes.
