Abstract
The detection of ultra high-energy neutrinos is key to solving the long-standing mystery of the origin of the most energetic cosmic rays. Much effort has gone in to searches for these neutrinos , using a variety of techniques. The approach that has the largest potential aperture for detecting these rare particles is the lunar Cherenkov technique , in which a conventional radio telescope is used to search for a nanosecond-scale radio pulse produced by a neutrino-induced particle shower in the upper layers of the Moon. Thus it employs the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to extend the high-energy end of neutrino astronomy. We describe some of the challenges involved in pursuing this form of radio astronomy , including signal-processing and ionospheric effects that become significant on such short timescales , and how we address them in our own such project , Lunaska, in both recent and upcoming observations.
