Methodology
In this paper, there are three different methodological parts. The first part involves choosing a representative sample of
households for conducting the primary survey. For this purpose, a questionnaire has been designed which captures the household
lifestyle pattern1. Initially a pilot survey was done involving 10 households. Later a much more structured questionnaire was
finalized. The final questionnaire covers broadly five different aspects of household information. These are personal details, travel
information, household activities, education and awareness level of households and finally household expenditure. Personal information
includes all information about the household family members for example their age, sex, occupation and income. Travel
information includes information on the number of vehicles that the household possess, the kind of vehicle and fuel being used,
the number of kilometres travelled daily, other modes of transport being used, the time and purpose of travel, the occupancy in
public modes, people’s preference for public transport, suggestions for improving public transport, etc. As far as household activities
are concerned, it includes information on household cooking, lighting and use of household appliances. Education and awareness
is an important component of the questionnaire and includes some qualitative questions about their general awareness on
global warming, carbon emissions, carbon footprint, the source of such information, any measure that the household takes for
reducing their footprint, and finally factors other than incomes, that drives their consumption decisions. Lastly the expenditure
section seeks information on various household activity related expenditures and the total monthly expenditure of the household.
The total expenditure data has been collected as a proxy variable for those households who does not want to reveal their income.
The second part of the methodology involves, calculation of carbon footprint from the households. Calculation of carbon
footprint (CF) has been done using the following formula.
