In this study image analysis has been used to
measure various dimensions of particles. The term
image analysis refers to computer analysis of digital images. With image analysis measurements can
be accomplished thousands of times faster, more
accurate and with a better repeatability than with
manual techniques. The first image analysis techniques were developed in the late sixties. Moore
(1968) organized the approach to image analysis
by computer and laid the basis for a relatively
rapid method of automated measurements. In the
early stage of development it was impossible to
save or freeze the images, measurements had to be
done ‘‘semi-manually’’ directly on the monitor.
Today, in contrast, images are saved in the computer’s fast image memory and measured immediately.
Present technology also allows measurements of
very large amounts of data at the same time.
