In each country there are differences about cultures, languages, religions, beliefs and lifestyle. This makes each country has unique and different living. These differences are cause of Culture shock. Culture shock is the culture of a foreign country that is different from our culture or we are not familiar with it. It is not in the textbooks. It is up to base on the experience of each person to live in a foreign country or meet in their respective countries. It is strange how much depends on the attitude, adaptation and habituation of each person. I believe that everyone has experience about Culture shock. Whichever it is experience from living in a foreign country or in your country. Also I ever had experience about Culture shock as well.
My experience about Culture shock does not occur due to live in a foreign country. But it happens in my own country. When it comes to Culture shock, it reminded me of Chinese tourists, who I met when I was a training student at one of the resort of Koh Samet in Rayong. In those days, I have trained at the department of the resort's restaurant. I have met with Chinese tourists, who stay in the resort. And they would take a meal at the resort's restaurant. Most Chinese tourists would come together as a group at least 10 people and they have one interpreter came with them. Chinese tourists will make a lot of noise and ignore each other. While eating, they hardly talked at all times. They talk while they have a meal. They talked together as they did not see long time. Only two Chinese tourists talked together as if 10 people talk together. When 10 Chinese tourists talk together as well as 100 people are taking together. Their behavior make they look like have no manners and it was disturbing others. Probably it because Thai culture have taught that we should not talk while eating, so I felt it was inappropriate. And another reason that made me felt badly with Chinese tourists is that Chinese tourists left a pile of food scraps from their mouth on the table. It makes manners of Chinese tourists look worse more. At first, I face those event it surprised me so much. I was annoyed and suspected in the same time. I wonder why they have to talk so loud like that. It seems they shout rather than they talk. And I would like to tell them to be quiet, but I do not dare. The advantages that I get from this experience about Culture shock are it made me to learn about the habits and culture of China. I have to practice patience from such a nuisance. The disadvantages from this experience about Culture shock are it makes me looked image of China have changed. From the first time I think of China I will see a great country, developed countries and prosperous country. But to see the behavior of Chinese tourists, they made me lose trust in China. I disagree with their talking loudly while dining or doing other activities in public. However I cannot do anything because I are serving them. Howsoever, I was trying to adjust my attitude to look that it was normal for them. Because of our living cultural with their living culture are different. They may be unaware that they talk too loudly because it is what they do normally. When I faced the events like that again and again, it made me accustomed to it and can get it. That also it means that I have learned about from the exotic cultures from Chinese. Experience about Culture shock from Chinese tourists, I have learned that we cannot decide what is true, what is wrong, what is good or what is bad. So there are a lot of thing that we need to learn and understand it.
So many behaviors of foreigners are causes of culture shock to us. It does not mean that those behaviors are not wrong or bad. But it is a new thing that we never know yet and we have to learn from it. Culture shock just is a different culture of each country. It is a common thing that they do on a regular basis. It was strange at a first time we faced with it. But over time it will be something that teaches us to know about the culture of the foreigners that we never knew before. Then we can learn and understand those differences later. And on the other hand, many cultures that we have done it could be a Culture shock for foreigners it is not. In this way, you need to open your heart and eyes for a new culture that it can help you spend happily.
