Conclusions
The millennium drought, probably the worst since
European settlement, has now exerted its influence
across much of southern and eastern Australia for
over half a decade. Although Australian river
ecosystems are fully capable of surviving droughts
when their surroundings are in a natural state, there is real scientific concern that humans have modified
much of the Australian landscape to such an extent
that survival and recovery after drought can no longer
be taken for granted
