In particular, our findings lead us to believe that
companies in China and the U.A.E. should integrate
SRSS into an organization’s long-term strategy, culture,
and operational decision making to reap competitive
benefits. This prescription is not new; Porter
and Kramer (2006) argued that: “It is through [SRSS]
that the company will make the most significant
social impact and reap the greatest business benefits.”
Companies in emerging economies may be well
advised to go beyond institutional compliances and
precisely assess the real win-win opportunities of
SRSS. This is especially true for the environmental
aspects of SRSS. We might expect Chinese companies
at some future point to lead global “green” competition
due to increased regulatory and MNC pressures
and especially in response to a growing level of general
information about the economic value of GSCP
(e.g., economies of scale, export revenue). As a major
global manufacturer country and a point of disposal
of end-of-life products for MNCs, the Chinese government
and businesses, with relative scarcity of
resources and potential “green barriers” to trade (Zhu
et al., 2005), are expected to implement policies and
strategies to reduce the environmental and social
impacts of their suppliers, to find new opportunities
for competition (e.g., serving as “green” suppliers to
MNCs) and establish “green” national competitive
advantage (e.g., export more products and attract
more FDI). Similarly, as a fast-growing country with
large purchasing volumes due to its mega construction
and infrastructure projects (e.g., hotels, airports, ports,
malls, etc.) and as a growing re-export destination
(Majid, 2010), the U.A.E. government and businesses
are expected to raise awareness about SRSS, with focus
on adopting socially responsible business standards
and best practices that reduce the environmental burdens
of the nation’s mega-projects, and position itself
as a socially responsible business hub (White, 2010).
