This article has explored some complex
physiology and pathophysiology associated
with COPD and presented explanations for the
concepts of work of breathing, accessory
muscle use, ventilation and perfusion, altered
gas exchange, cor pulmonale, and respiratory/
hypoxic drive. The aim has been to provide in
depth descriptions of common signs, symptoms
and presentations of COPD within the practice
nurse setting with a focus on improving
knowledge and understanding of the disease
process for practice nurses.
