I met a fellow paratrooper at the Tipp City Bob Evans this evening. He was a Vietnam vet who served in the 1st Cav (Airborne), 101st Airborne and the 82nd Airborne as an artilleryman. He was one of the replacement troops sent to fill in the 1st Cav after the battle at La Drang valley back in 1965. He shared some of his experiences with me for 2 hours and I was in awe. He also talked about a mass tactical jump on a Caribbean island off the coast of Puerto Rico where the winds were too high. Paratroopers were hurt not only from the jump in high winds but cattle that were on the DZ became entangled in the suspension lines and men were dragged across the rocky ground. He recollected that when they got back to Ft. Bragg, there were a lot of paratroopers on crutches. I took notes and will write about this for the Paraglide magazine. I invited him to the MB Ridgway Chapter's Legend Affair this Saturday night at the Dayton Amvets on Leo Street.
