The range of the contribution of NTFPs to cash income
across settings demonstrates that the effectiveness of policies
to promote NTFP management and cash income generation
will depend on many characteristics of each particular
setting. For example, promoting tendu leaf production may
have little impact in regions where the ecology and climate
are not conducive to high quality and quantity of leaves.
Similarly, policies to promote bidi production, such as the
removal of government sales restrictions, may benefit all
villagers in villages with access to tobacco inputs (including
upper caste villagers), whereas policies to promote sal plate
production may differentially benefit tribal villagers.
