Siddhartha decided to remain under the tree until he reached enlightenment. Through the night, he thought about countless generations of humans suffering. With all the energy he could muster, he searched for away to overcome this cruel cycle. In the morning, the young man opened his eyes. On his face was a look of calmness and confidence. He was the moment he became the Buddha, which means the Enlightened One. After his enlightenment, the Buddha stayed under the tree fir several weeks. His heart was full of peace and joy. Much of the wisdom the Buddha had gained consisted of basic truths about life. One was that human suffering results from personal greed and self-indulgence. That is, most people think too much about their possessions and too little about justice and happiness for everyone. Fortunately, the Buddha said, these ills can be overcome. So he provided a way of doing so. He created a code of conduct known as the Eightfold Path. It is a series of positive choices people can make to improve both their own lives as well as society.
