Hospitals across the nation are facing increasing risks of manmade and natural disasters along with the uphill battle of planning and preparing for these disasters. In 2002, the United States Government, through the Department of Health and Human Services, established the "National Bioterrorism Grant" to prepare hospitals of all sizes for the possibility of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) disaster. Today the grant is called the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) and recognizes that disasters are both natural as well as manmade and has subsequently has shifted the grant's focus from CBRNE events to an all hazards disaster preparation. The National Bioterrorism Grant emphasized purchasing equipment and supplies for hospitals while the current HPP Grant is providing support to hospitals and healthcare systems for their planning, response, and recovery to disasters.
