I had to read the book twice to find and understand the themes in this play. Finally, I managed and found out that there are at least two main themes.
The first one is religion. I hope you still remember an absent character Wilson or do you? He is a God-like character, integral to the story but absent. In religion, messages from God are relayed to its followers, who are expected to obey the orders. The same it is with Gus and Ben. They never know what their next job will be. They are just waiting in the room for orders of someone who they will never see.
The second one is miscommunication between individuals. Even part of the title suggests this - "Dumb." First, there is no communication between Wilson and the two assassins. Second, most conversation that occurs between Ben and Gus is pointless, and each character has trouble dealing with each other. Ben’s typical response to Gus’s constant questions is silence. Furthermore, they have just few discussions about their job and about expressions such as “put the kettle on” and “light the kettle”.¨
