1. Present the various-size empty cups to the student. Ask and promote the grasping of each cup with both hands. Assess which cup the most easily held. If problems persist, try modifying the cup design or use other cups until one is found that is easily held. Use continuous social reinforcement for this step as well as for Steps 2 through 4.
2. To encourage proprioception skills, have the student hold the empty cup with both hands, then with the student's eyes closed, ask him or her to move the cup all the way to the left, then to the right, and then bring it to the mouth.
A variation of this would be to make a game out of attempting to place the cup on a circle while the eyes are closed.
3. Continue with Step 2, attempting to reduce the grasp from two hands to one hand. 11 this cannot reasonably be accomplished proceed with the program using a two-handed grasp; otherwise, continue to attempt to achieve a one- banded grasp.
4. With liquid in the cup, have the student bring the cup to his or her mouth, parallel to the face.
5. With the completion of Step 4, physically assist the student in slowly tilting the cup to introduce liquid into the mouth. If any choking activity is noted, stop the training immediately and seek professional assistance or guidance before continuing the lesson.
6. Slowly reduce both physical guidance and social reinforcement to the student until the objective is met.
