RESULTS
Of the 951 subjects considered for this study, 819 were
euthyroid; 83 had SHyper, 16 of whom had thyrotropin
values lower than 0.1 mIU/L; and 29 had SHypo. Five had
overt hypothyroidism and 15 overt hyperthyroidism.
Because of the small number of subjects, these two types
of thyroid dysfunction were excluded from all analyses.
Therefore, because the two most-representative groups of
thyroid dysfunction were SHyper and SHypo, the relationship
between thyroid dysfunction and mortality was calculated
for these two groups and compared with those of the
euthyroid group.
