Washing
You may think that because you have the minimum of equipment and facilities at camp, it is a good opportunity to forget about such things as washing and bathing. Far from it Since you will probably be involved in more strenuous activities than normal, washing is particularly important.
Do not waste drinking water by using it for washing, unless there is a plentiful supply. Take your washing gear to the nearest water source: a tap, river or lake, and wash there. It saves carrying water back to the tent. Do remember to use drinking water for cleaning your teeth.
Always wash your hands before handling food or preparing a meal, and after using the toilet.
Have a good all-over wash every three or four days and shampoo your hair at the same time. Make your own bath at came if there is no lake or river nearby: dig a shallow hole and line it with a piece of polythene.
Hardworking feet must be looked after carefully. Wash them thoroughly every day and dry well, especially between the toes. Use foot powder generously. Trim your toe nails regularly
Flannel
Always rinse out your flannel after use, then put it out to dry on a bush, stone or stick. If it becomes smelly, you can boil it.
Soap
Keep soap dry in a container, otherwise you will end up with a slimy mess. If you put it down on the ground it will get covered with earth or grass.
Towel
Take a small towel rather than a bath size one. It will dry more quickly and will take up less room in your pack. Always hang it up to dry after use, but take it into the tent at night to prevent it getting damp with dew.
Toothbrush
If you forget to take your toothbrush or toothpaste with you, you can use your finger instead. Dip it in salt in place of toothpaste.
