Generali.
When i first describe the process of the scenes continously, it is easy to understand in the second step, which part of a story/scene is played backwards.
The film Generali:
We are located in a tennis hall. Mrs. Kerber hits the ball with full force. The ball hits the net, so badly that it jumps up. Then the ball falls down on the edge of the net and looses its swing. The ball stays on the net and for a moment and can‘t decide, on which side it should fall. Finally it falls to Mrs. Kerber‘s side. A ball girl runs out to pick it up and Mrs. Kerber, who is slightly disappointed but without any big aggression, throws her tennis racket into the air, without catching it again. The racket hits the ground and jumps back in the air. At the same time, a helper behind her, collects the surrounding balls into a metal basket.
What happens backwards in the scene:
The camera follows the ball, which flies up from the ground and remains on the edge of the net for a short moment. It flies up again, gains speed, bounces on the edge and flies at full speed towards Mrs. Kerber. The racket flies off the ground and into Mrs. Kerber‘s hand. The ball hits the racket and we see the impact backwards until the camera lands on the face of Mrs. Kerbel. The helper, who collects the balls and the whole environment progresses forward normally.
A professional kitchen, in a high end restaurant. A male and a female cook work side by side at two different cooking stations. Both throw the pans up, vegetables whirl through the air. Both put some oil in their pans, so you can see clearly how the liquid flows from the bottles into the pans. It creates a huge flame in the man‘s pan.
What happens backwards in the scene:
The flame goes back into the pan, the liquid goes back into the bottle. This motion rewinds everthing backwards. Everything else goes forward. In order to give the whole thing a special touch, the flame starts at the beginning in slow motion, but then accelerates itself immediately to normal speed. The real action around us runs in a slight motion forward. This speed difference makes the thing a bit strange. To make the whole story even more mysterious, the entire action is staged so when the two cooks pour the liquid into the pans, this happens synchronously, we clearly see, that the liquid from the male cooks pan flows backwards into the bottle.
Entrance area of an apartment. A staircase leading upwards. A father, middle aged man, at the top of the staircase. He climbs the ladder and begins to paint the wall. There are paint tins underneath the ladder. A child runs down the stairs and tilts the paint tins. The tins fly open and the colours splash around and pour out everwhere.
What happens backwards in the scene:
The child is frozen with fright. Colours fly and flow back into the tins. The entire disaster with the child, goes backwards. But the action of what the father is doing, goes forward.
A wide street in the big city. The traffic is not too dense. A car slows downs and the next car drives quite hard into it. We see the airbag unfolding from the second car driver‘s viewpoint.
Both drivers jump out of their cars and run towards each other. Rather from the fear that something even more serious happens. We leave it open, wheather the two are arguing or tolerating each other.
What happens backwards in the scene:
The whole action backwards. We play with the speed of the process. The men goes back to the car quickly backwards. Extreme slow motion as the airbag folds back in. Slow motion in the beginning, of how the cars split apart again and regain their original shape with a time warp effect. At the end everything has a normal speed again.
In the background, the traffic continues as normal, as nothing had happened. Here you can also play with the speed, so that we can run the actions in the background and the actions in the foreground at contrasting speeds.
A man is jogging. He reaches his house. From that point, the camera runs parallel with him, as in an old Hollywood film. We follow the actor from the side, from one room to another and we drive with our camera through the walls. He enters his house. In the corridor his dog runs towards him in the direction of the door. We see the passage to the kitchen. A mother wipes chocolate off of a boys mouth. The man casually picks up a cup full of popcorn or candy and throws a few of it into his mouth. He hurries into the next room, where he‘s already wearing different clothes. At this moment, everything slows down.
He throws himself into the sofa over the arm rest in one quick motion. What then happens, however, he gets more and more fat. Here we make few intersections. In the takes one can clearly see, that his body is growing more and more. A button on his shirt flies away, the belly grows, the face gets older and puffy. He sleeps with a remote control and a piece of cake on this stomach.
What happens backwards in the scene:
The entire action is reversed. All around him (dog,
