The major limitation for increased production using flow-through technology today is the amount of available water.
However, production intensity and water utilization vary considerably between production facilities, as well as within each
facility depending on season and biomass. The presented samples of TAN and CO2 (Fig. 4A and C) for smolts are taken approximately one week before sea-transfer, and thus serve as a measure of a maximal production intensity situation (although not necessarily minimal specific water consumption). Samples from tanks with juvenile fish (Fig. 4B and D) seem to represent a more intensive production, most likely caused by restricted volumes of heated water. Some producers are above current scientific and legislative recommendations, and would most likely benefit from a technology-
switch. Others are producing at lower intensity levels, and may still have some potential for production increase based on
traditional technology within current guidelines.
