This paper discusses the implementation of network covert
channels on the Google Android mobile platform. Mobile
devices such as smart phones and tablets have become an
ubiquitous computing platform, and an increasing amount of
sensitive data is being stored on these portable devices. The
Android platform accounts for just under 50% of the world-
wide smart phone market [9], and combined with its open
application market policy, is a prime target for malicious ap-
plications that steal user's data. This paper will show that
covert communication channels can be implemented on the
Android platform that allow data to be leaked from the de-
vice to a remote server in a manner where it appears that
no subversive communication is taking place.
