The two films, The Closet and My Life in Pink, feature characters
who are gay or cross-gender identifying, respectively, and the films’
dialogues offer multiple examples of language used to discuss issues
of homosexuality. The Closet chronicles a mild-mannered accountant’s
attempt to pose as a gay man in order to keep his job at a condom
factory. My Life in Pink centers around 9-year old Ludo, who feels
strongly that he was meant to be a girl. Using comedic devices, each
film highlights the more serious message of outsiders’ reactions to the
perceived homosexuality of the protagonists, and these reactions
become particularly apparent through the language referencing the
protagonists.
